Description
Joy Patterson’s paraphrase of I Corinthians 13 receives sympathetic treatment at the hands of Thomas Pavlechko, who pairs it with the haunting English folk-tune O WALY WALY. For unison choir and keyboard, with a simple (and optional) descant on the final stanza.

Anthem text
Three precious gifts the Spirit gives:
a changeless faith no power can move;
abiding hope through every trial;
greatest of all, unfailing love.

The noblest speech, the bravest deed,
wise prophecy or quenchless faith,
when not by love's kind wisdom led,
are noisy gong or empty breath.

For love is patient, love is kind,
is slow to anger, is not proud,
is not resentful, does not boast,
is quick to speak a healing word.

Love does not seek to have its way,
does not rejoice at evil deeds,
but looks for truth and works for good,
and walks the way that kindness leads.

O Spirit, Giver of our lives,
source of all blessings ours to share,
teach us to live, through all our days,
your love's example in your care.

-Joy F. Patterson, based on I Corinthians 13
