Review
"Sopranos introduce the original melody for this carol with an expansive range of an eleventh marked by strong downward gestures painting the initial phrase of text. Subsequent verses incorporate the full choir as the tune undergoes continual variation, appearing momentarily in parts without another complete, unaltered iteration. The melody introduces a flattened seventh scale degree at the midpoint, and this inflection blossoms into a recurring harmonic element of the music without ever obscuring the placid F major context. Sopranos divide in one climactic measure, and altos and basses divide in the final cadence. Otherwise the work is for four voices and could be navigated by choirs of all sizes." --AAM Journal, May/June 2025
Anthem text
Love came down at Christmas,
love all lovely, love divine;
love came down at Christmas:
star and angels gave the sign.
Love came down at Christmas,
love all lovely, love divine;
love was born at Christmas:
star and angels gave the sign.
Worship we the Godhead,
love incarnate, love divine;
worship we our Jesus,
but wherewith for sacred sign?
Love shall be our token;
love be yours and love be mine,
love to God and neighbor,
love for plea and gift and sign.
