Description
A delightful Easter carol, using bird calls as inspiration and accompaniment at the opening and closing of the anthem.

Anthem text
Spring bursts today,
for Christ is risen and all the earth’s at play.

Flash forth, thou Sun,
the rain is over and gone, its work is done.

Winter is past,
Sweet Winter is come at last, is come at last.

Uplift thy head,
O pure white Lily through the winter dead.

Beside your dams,
Rejoice and leap, ye merry-making lambs.

All herds and flocks,
Rejoice, all Beasts of thickets and of rocks.

Sing, Creatures sing!
Men and Angels and Birds and everything.

Spring bursts today!

-Christina Rosetti

Comments from the Composer, Nancy Cooper
"An Easter Carol" was inspired by the exuberant text of poet Christina Rossetti. Because of various melodic constraints, some of the lines of text have been re-arranged, and a few verses were omitted to keep the anthem a more standard length. The final verse's descant includes a prominent Easter egg. Find it if you can!

Most of the birdsongs are my own transcriptions of western Montana birds; the remainder are generic patterns of birdsongs. For those who are birders, here are the initial appearances of the transcribed songs: Mourning Dove: m.1; Song Sparrow: m. 4; Black-capped chickadee: m.7; Robin: m.16; Western Meadowlark: m.19. –Nancy Cooper
