James Quinn, S.J.

James Quinn was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1919. He was educated at St. Aloysius' College in Glasgow and Glasgow University. Quinn joined the Society of Jesus (S.J., British Province) in 1939 and was ordained in 1950. He served as a consultant to the International Commission on English in the Liturgy, and spent much of his priesthood as an educator. Quinn was spiritual director at Beda College in Rome from 1976 to 1980. His first collection of hymns, New Hymns for All Seasons, was published in 1969. The hymns in this collection and new hymns written after that publication are included in Selah's collection, Praise for All Seasons. Quinn's hymns are included in nearly every English language hymnal. Fr Quinn died on 8 April 2010 at St Joseph’s House in Edinburgh, where he had spent the past ten years.
