Description
This anthem, a setting of words from Song of Songs, was commissioned to mark the retirement of Jack Warren Burnam from Immanuel Church on the Green (New Castle, Delaware) after many years of service. Beginning quietly, a harmonically shifting ostinato-based accompaniment pushes the music forward to an ecstatic climax in the middle for the famous verses of “Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.” After the final statement of this text, a brief coda repeating the words “come away” lets the music recede into the distance once more.

Anthem text
As a lily among brambles,
so is my love among maidens.
As an apple tree among the trees of the wood,
so is my beloved among young men.
With great delight I sat in his shadow,
and his fruit was sweet to my taste,
he brought me to the banqueting house,
and his banner over me was love.

My beloved speaks and says to me:
“Arise, my love, my fair one,
and come away;
for lo, the winter is past,
the rain is over and gone,
the flowers appear upon the earth,
the time of singing has come,
and the voice of the turtledove
is heard in our land.
The fig tree puts forth its figs,
and the vines are in blossom;
They give forth fragrance.

Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.
